The roof is very puzzling, as it seems to have been over painted in red emulsion which comes off easily, everywhere! There is evidence of a layer of black paint underneath, but the red seems pretty original. I foolishly tried painting it again (on the back out of view) in an identical red humbrol enamel - NOT a good result! I've now gently sanded the whole roof and am leaving it alone until I find out how to treat it properly!
